Spring deer hunt debated

Will there be a spring deer season in northwestern Minnesota? Department of Natural Resources officials will decide this week whether the unprecedented hunt will be used to help "depopulate" deer herds where a cattle disease has broken out.

"Our mission is to get bovine TB out of the deer herd up here,'' said Paul Telander, northwest regional wildlife manager.

DNR officials last week stepped up their efforts to kill deer in northwestern Minnesota where an outbreak of bovine tuberculosis in cattle and deer was discovered in 2005. Aerial shooters in a helicopter killed 110 whitetails in the core 164-square-mile area around Skime, in Roseau County. The aerial shooting began Monday, and was the first time the DNR had used a helicopter to increase the deer kill.
