Lake Superior's Chequamegon Bay Fishing report 4.8.10

LAKE SUPERIOR: WIND WIND WIND, Seems every other day guys are getting blown off the lake, but that's spring! Boats are out from all the landings now.  Coho, Browns, Splake, Steelhead, and the occaisional big Laker are the early season targets. Fishing has been good with planer boards and stickbaits in real shallow water next to shore. Flasher/fly combos have been producing as well. A few guys fishing smaller spoons like Flashbacks and Humpys or Ladyslippers, and doing well on these too.  Find the warmest water available, and you'll find the fish. A few folks have been out to the traditional lake trout grounds, fishing deep with riggers and finding some lake trout out deep as well. Shorecasters are catching fish on PK's and Cleos off the rivermouths.

SMELT have been getting better and better every night. Still no reports of big numbers, but last night there were a few guys with 1/2 a bucket to a full bucket at the end of the night. I would guess this weekend, or early next week for the peak; BUT it could stretch out all the way to next weekend, we will have to see. When they start to run heavily, then get up here asap last year they ran good for only 2 nights!  We are taking orders again this year for bulk smelt, call us to get on the list early if you want smelt! 715-373-0551 We also buy smelt from folks, come see us if you get a bunch!

We have already slimed the boat with Coho, Browns, Steelies, and Splake, and I am ready to roll for Trolling, (Lakers or mixed bag Trout and Salmon) Casting, (mixed bag) or big spawning Northern Pike trips (C&R) here right now! Fishing is currently excellent so give us a call and let's get out there! PLEASE REMEMBER Cohos, and all trout, are delicious, and nutritious, Most anglers keep enough for a meal or two, and let the rest go. These fish are mostly all wild, naturally reproducing, and very slow growing.  Please respect the resource!
STEELHEAD fishing has been spotty. Some nice fish being caught, but lack of rain is making run prediction hard. Best just to spend your time on the river, and be there when a fresh pod of fish rolls thru. Warmer temps and a soaking rain will get more fish in our creeks.  Please release the steelies. They are much more valuable on the end of your line, than a fork.

* INLAND LAKES are way ahead of schedule. Panfish are already moving shallow on some lakes. Walleye and northern are done spawning on some lakes too. Panfish bite will remain good thru gamefish opener, when the post spawn bite should be in full swing!
