Turkey Hunting / Re: Turkey Scouting Pays Off!

Got me another one!!!!

I got an invitation to hunt with Chris Kittleson. So I bought an extra permit, and headed out to the Kittleson farm yesterday morning. Those birds were kicking our butts all day. We covered several properties in search of a responsive bird but were unable to find any. Chris wanted to try waiting a little longer on the set ups to see if they were coming in silent. We waited almost 6 minutes in some set ups LOL. But that didn't work so I showed Chris an old trick my Dad passed down to me on how to squeak them in with a stick, that didn't even work. So being that the day was almost over and it was Chris's B-day ( Everybody wish Chris a happy B-day ) I said we could quit for the day and start over in the morning...  Chris wouldn't have it. He said, lets drive around the properties one more time and find a dang bird....  So we drove around all the farms without seeing a bird when Chris said, we should look at another farm he had "forgotten about"  Sure enough there were hundreds of huge Toms running all over the place strutting and gobbling.....  Ok, there were 4 Toms kinda just sitting there, but it was still exciting. They were in a lower field in view of the road and the only way to get at them would be from the top and drop down. So we took some landmarks into consideration and drove around to the top. I got to where I figured we were close and started to slip down the hill which was so thick there was no way to set up on the hillside in the timber, if you want to call that timber. Chris wanted to stop and try my squeak a stick method but I insisted we get to the edge of the field. As were neared the edge belly crawling a bird started clucking about 10 yards away and Chris said maybe we need to stop, I said lets go for broke and get to the edge where we could film and shoot effectively. Finally I got to the edge and just started slipping my feet under me when Chris says Dan.. PSSST. DAN! LOOK LEFT!!! So I take a glance to the left and here are two big Toms staring at me. I get the gun up and there is a bunch of brush in the way so I wait and the bird actually started coming closer and walked around the brush. At 19 yards even his kevlar vest couldn't stop my 3 1/2 " mag projectiles. The 1st shot knocked him over but he was able to get up and needed a couple more shots to knock him down for good... Man them things are tough!  1 1/4 spurs, 10 1/2 beard.

Turkey Hunting / 15 MINUTE TURKEY SEASON....
« on: May 16, 2008, 08:14:40 PM »
Took my buddy Dave out hunting wednesday afternoon.... Opening day of his season. Spyed some birds from the truck snuck around from the back side to within 70 yards and called. 2 big Toms came in and Dave shot the biggest. His entire season was over in 15 minutes. Unfortunatly I missed the hit on film in the thick woods    But did capture the rest of the hunt.... 1 1/8 spurs...

And here is the coyote I called in to 1 yard. I saw this den hole that was obviously active and aimed the video camera down the hole and mouth called some mouse chirp squeeks and this head popped out and stared at me for a secone then backed down the hole.

Turkey Hunting / Old Codger...
« on: May 09, 2008, 08:37:10 PM »
Day #1

My turkey hunting partner Dave asked me to take his buddy "Old Codger" out this afternoon and help him end an unlucky streak that has lasted a very long time and get him his 1st bird. We walked threw the woods striking yelps every couple hundred yards till we got a gobble and set up.. It was a hot tom and I could tell it was running in by how fast the gobbles were coming towards us... I set up ten yards behind Codger ( not sure if he has a real name ) Dave set up at a 45 degree angle 10 yards back in case one of us couldn't get the shot on video the other would   so suddenly he answers my seductive yelp with a thunder gobble about 50 yards in front of us but still out of view. I hear brush move and here comes a monster bird running and tripping over his 28 inch beard, he runs in till he is standing 5 yards from Dave ( 15 yards from Codger) with both the bird and Dave staring each other in the eyes   I turn to look at Codger and the gun is pointed the other way and he ain't even looking. Bird putts and runs out of there like a rocket. Me and Dave look back at Codger who is still staring out into the woods in the wrong direction and we start laughing... Codger spins around and says would you shut up, your gonna scare the birds! there was one gobblin a little bit ago!
We will give it another try tomorrow

Day #2
Codger was looking forward to hunting today. So anywho, we decided to try the walk 100 yards call and listen for a response method in the same woods again knowing there are more Toms in there somewhere...  So we get to the spot where codger didn't see the Tom standing 15 yards from him yesterday and I let out a soft yelp and get a double gobble just over the hill from us about 60 or 70 yards away.  We scramble to trees and get ready. This time I sit right behind a log, to make sure I can help him.
I call again, nothing........  again a few minutes later... No response. Just when I was starting to sweat the big ol red head pops over the hill 30 yards out.  Then up pops another good Tom.    They are coming in carfully. At 25 yards when bird # 1 steps into an opening, I say take him!

Boom! and big bird does a complete mid air somersault landing on his back...

Then suddenly the bird flips to his feet and starts to take off... Codge jumps to his feet and runs after.

As the bird takes to flight I yell out shoot him Codge!!  Shoot him again!

Codge says "How did I miss?

Looks like maybe it was a ninja bird and when it did that flip it was dodging all your pellets

Codge is certainly becoming a challenge for me... But I'm determined to get him a bird... He is taking Friday off to drink away his miss and recover from the hard core running and gunning.  Back at it sometime Saturday.

Dave also filmed the action from a different point of view.

Turkey Hunting / Turkey Scouting Pays Off!

Turkey Scouting Pays Off!

On the 1st day we glassed a large Tom cruising around a woodlot that is flooded only giving him one way out. So my plan was to run around the woodlot and set up and give a couple yelps and wait, but 1/2 way around I ran into about 10 birds and hit the dirt. Me and my camera man buddy Lee crawled up to a big hay bale and I started calling. They all came right over... Every one was a hen!  So now we didn't know if thew big Tom had made it threw the gap yet and raced over there hoping to beat him. I got set up against a tree all contorted and twisted, but in the only good position where I could get the camera over my shoulder and have good shooting. I gave a couple soft calls and got no answer, so I waited a bit and then turned up the volume. No answer. Waited and then with the end of the day approaching decided to take a peak out into the field. I told the camera guy my intention and then got up and stuck my head out to peak into the field and guess what?  Here comes that big ol Tom heading right to us on a dead run about 50 yards out. I spun back to my position and looked at the camera and said INCOMING!!! As soon as I got situated and turned on my own gun cam he was already in front of us. He slowed to a walk and started pecking at the ground and then looking around for the hen. When he was in the middle of the opening at 25 / 30 yards, I put the bead on his head and..... MISSED!  What the heck?  I never miss!

It was a long walk back to the truck, but hey, what good is a turkey video without a miss or two.  When we got to the truck we could hear a gobbler lighting up the woods in another spot on the farm where I had been seeing a huge Tom. The next morning I had to work, but after work we spotted a tom out in some grass on our way to hunt the Tom from the night before. We had to park on the other side of this farm cause it too is just tree lines and brush. after a long sneak and one wet river crossing, I got into position and started calling. Within minutes two hens came running in and flew across a ditch and landed 10 yards from me and started yelping and looking around for the hen they had heard. I looked up and saw two dark birds that defiantly were not hens coming in from where the hens came. They came all the way till they were about 7 yards away. Jakes. I was enjoying them when 2 large Toms strutted out from where the Jakes came from and heading my way. They held up at about 65 yards. When they went to leave I tried calling to them even though I had the jakes right next to me.

No dice. The Jakes just stood there looking at me, but the Toms would not come over, even with all the live bait.  As I got up to leave the jakes still just stood there as if they new they were safe.  I headed over to where we heard the Tom the morning before and we glassed until we found him near that woodlot. I devised a plan and we drove around to an access about 3/4 of a mile from him, but the only way we could use to slip in without being noticed. After along crawl over a hill and along a sparse tree line we could hear him gobbling like crazy unprovoked from us. As we slid into a lying position in some briar's 100 yards from the bird I turned and looked at Lee one last time and whispered "Dead bird" just after he sounded off with another double gobble.

I did one soft yelp and it was responded with 2 quick gobbles and almost instantly the big bird walked into the field. I could not call no more because we were lying face down and would have been busted with no tree behind us... But no more calls were needed. He came all the way to 40 yards and ate lead. Woooowhooo!!!!

Promote Your Business Here / Re: Hunting Marsh Bucks DVD

It should be noted that the DVD Mudbrook is talking about is filmed on public land in Wisconsin and shows the formula a few hard core Wisc. hunters use to knock down mature bucks consistantly...  And the video was produced without sponsors, with no advertisements, and no outfitters, just a couple hard core guys showing step by step how they get the job done !  Andrea D'Aquisto is featured in the DVD showing his hunt for Wisconsins current #4 typical arrowed in Waukesha county Wisc.
Here are a few of the reviews we have been getting:

Quote
I just finished this video and must admit that the $20 price tag had me a bit leary. $20 will buy subscriptions to my 2 favorite hunting magazines. I went ahead and figured I'd spend $20 in 2 weeks on cokes. I'm glad I did, I was pleasantly impressed. The guys are honest and if all you want to see is big deer after big deer get shot then you need to shop else where. If you want a lifetime of experience bowhunting giant public land whitetails jammed in to 2.5 hours of hardcore bow hunting educational, informational and entertaining video then this is your one stop shop. I was blown away by some of the statements at first, but the more I watched the more it came together. These guys approach hunting big deer unlike I've ever heard and it works! They sure know where to find big deer and how to get CLOSE. I had never heard of hunting close to a bedded buck in the evenng. These guys consistently get in their bedroom or atleast scary close and tell you how to do the same thing. I really enjoyed the information on post season scouting and will definately try to put it to use. Oh, back to those magazine subs, I realized those magazines print the same crap in different forms month after month. I can't remember the last time I learned some ground breaking technique from one of the "pro's". These guys are different and they show you how to be different step by step so that you can avoid the public land crowds and hunt the big deer where they live. The video is aimed at hunting marshes in WI, but parts can be applied to any property, private or public. More videos like this need to be produced to get hunting TV and videos back to the educational format the began as. After watching the DVD and realizing it was NOT a 2.5 hour long infomercial with sponsor after sponsor jammed down your throat, I realized I'd much rather spend $20 for 1 information packed dvd than $10 for an extra long commercial.

Thanks guys, I really enjoyed it.

First of all I would like to say, that was by FAR the most informative video I have ever seen. I can tell you if those tactics are applied consistently and c orrectly, you will have a great chance of killing those slobs year after year. I really can't think of what I would change about the video. The small segment on seeing how a "stressed whitetail" reacts was something I never thought of. And believe me, in Michigan this is mostly the case. I consider myself very successful in hunting pressured bucks in Michigan and I have shot numerous mature bucks here. I have learned from this video, so I know the new hunters or some that are trying to kill big bucks should benefit greatly. If you took a person that never hunted whitetail before and they watched this video, it may give them knowledge that took me 20+ years to learn. Don't get me wrong, they will still need to go out and make mistakes themselves, but what a beginning edge!!!! great great great. Jarod, Dan and Lee, I think you guys are on to something big. Thank You

Adam

I think you did a great job of conveying the particulars of your big buck strategies. My first thought when I see someone who consistently scores on nice deer isn't to try to find where his "magic property" is, but rather how he or she hunted and what tactics they used. You guys have definitely set yourself apart from the pack as far as offering an education oriented dvd with some substance to it! I know that future productions will only improve on that.

I especially liked the discussion on bedding areas, and Dan finding the specific buck bed and how he would hunt it. The overall focus on hard work, finding multiple spots, and being aggressive was great. But again, it is the specific examples that make this dvd different.

They should be showing this at the local cinema!!!

Got mine and watched it... Great video done buy a group of real hardcore hunters. Probably the single best video I've ever seen on dedicated scouting and aggressive hunting approaches.

If you buy this video hoping to see an entertaining compilation of kills caught on tape, you will be disappointed. That's NOT what this video is all about. If that's what you want there's nothing wrong with that, but you'd be better served to go pick up the latest two volumes of Realtree Monster Bucks. Don't get me wrong -- I really enjoy Michael Waddell and the others during times when I'm thinking about hunting but can't be in the woods. But if you want a video that is going to teach you something that will make you better at what you are do while you are actually IN the woods, then order this video from the Blood Brothers.

The thing is, the time to watch this video is right NOW for anyone that wants to learn from it... The tactics begin with the fresh snowfalls and natural late season patterns that are now being restored with the chaos of gun season fading. There is no better time than NOW to begin looking for the buck you want to kill next year, and this video is a perfect tool for learning tactics to find where he beds, where he travels, and where you can intercept and kill him. Find his tracks, find his travel routes, find his sheds, get his picture on the trail cam, find your stand spots and entrance routes that account for various conditions, shine him where he feeds as he grows his antlers, etc.

Outstanding video about how to get YOUR buck, rather than a compilation of 4 minute segments bragging about and showing off the bucks that these guys killed...

If you are brand new to hunting, this video will help, but understand that you have a lot of learning to do starting at the ground floor. If you are a seasoned hunter, this video will still teach you something that you didn't think of or realize before.

If you're a hardcore whitetail hunter, this video is well worth the $20 to further fuel your arsenal of instincts and tactics. It also provides plenty of important steps that should keep us all busy during the off season waiting for the first hunt next year... Very inspiring!

Ice fish, shoot a 3d league to keep my skills sharp, and begin scouting for my buck next year using the tactics featured on this video -- that's my plan!
