Southern Lake Michigan Fishing Report: June 7, 2010
Kenosha Co.
Fishing in the harbor has been very slow, as I have not seen a fish caught at all recently. Word of the slow fishing is apparently out, as very few fishermen have even been out and many are not staying very long. The trolling bite has been good for those able to find the right areas. Good catches have been made from 40 all the way out to 130 feet of water. Dodger and green fly combinations have been working, but spoons are now taking more fish as well. Along with good coho catches, some large kings have been showing up as well, with fish already being caught in the 20# range by a few of the charter boats. Finding the right temps and alewife schools has been key to filling the cooler.
Racine Co.
Fishing from shore continues to be slow, with only an occassional coho caught (usually in the early mornings). If you can get alewives, they have been out-producing everything, but have been hard to get in any numbers. Trollers have been having good catches recently. Fish seem to be spread out and have been caught in as little as 30-50 feet and as deep as 120. Kings are starting to show up mixed in with the coho, which have accounted for most of the fish caught recently. Most of the kings have been smaller fish. Dodger and fly combos are still the best producer, with orange or red dodgers and green flies being a good choice.
Milwaukee Co.
In Milwaukee trollers have been catching decent numbers of coho and chinooks, along with a few rainbows and lake trout. Orange dodgers coupled with blue or green flies have taken the majority of fish, and the spoon bite remains slow. The most consistent depths have been 45 to 150 feet of water. Overall, Milwaukee shore fishing remains slow but some coho and brown trout have been taken off McKinley pier. Alewives fished on the bottom have produced the most. The McKinley fish cleaning station is now up and running.
Ozaukee Co.
There was light fishing pressure from the ramps, piers and harbor/shore and there was no effort from the Amsterdam ramp. There was action to report from the ramps. The temperature was in the high 50?s to high 60?s, skies were overcast and there was light to moderate wind to the east and southeast. Port Washington Ramp: The water at the ramp was light brown with moderate clarity and the temperature was 60-64? F. Chinook salmon, coho salmon, rainbow trout and lake trout were caught by anglers. Fifteen of 29 boats interviewed caught at least 1 fish, and averaged 3.9 fish. The fish were caught between 60 to 180 feet of water, from the surface to 90 feet down with flasher/flies, spoons, cut baits and swim baits on planer boards, dipsy divers and downriggers. Port Washington Utility: The water in the area was blue green with moderate to good clarity. Port Washington Piers: The water off the lakeside was calm, 56-58? F, blue green with good clarity. On the harbor side of the pier, the water was blue green with moderate to good clarity. Amsterdam Rd. Ramp: The water at the ramp was flat, in the low 60?s, and had good clarity.
Sheboygan Co.
There was light fishing pressure from the ramps and piers and shore, and no effort from Edgewater power plant or Cleveland ramp. There was action to report from the ramps and shore. The temperature was in the 60?s to low 70?s, skies were cloudy with occasional rain. On the 4th there was a light wind to the north; on the 5th there was a moderate wind to the west; on the 6th there was a light wind to the southeast. Sheboygan Ramps: The water at the ramp was 62-64? F, light brown with moderate clarity. Chinook salmon, coho salmon, and rainbow trout were caught by anglers.
Two of 7 boats interviewed caught at least one fish, and averaged 2 fish. The fish were caught between 110 and 120 feet of water, 20 to 90 feet down with spoons on leadcore, dipsy divers and downriggers. Sheboygan Piers: The water off the north pier was calm, blue green with good clarity. The water in the harbor was 62-64? F, brown with low clarity. The water on the lakeside of the south pier was calm, 58-60? F, blue green with moderate to good clarity. Sheboygan Shore: A brown trout was caught from a pier just north of Edgewater power plant on an earthworm. Cleveland Ramp: The water at the ramp was calm, in the mid 60?s, and had good clarity. No anglers were interviewed.
