Burnett County Trails
Happy Fall Y’all!
Our “Fall Season” for the trails in Burnett County is here! Our actual “ATV Trail System” is closed beginning today.
To help make things a little clearer, I’m not only going to send you a lengthy explanation, (see below), but I also want you to know that you can tell people that the majority of the Summer Use ATV Trails can be used this time of year. (It’s just the upper, most northern part of the county that these trails aren’t all on County Forest Land.)
HOWEVER, they need to know 2 VERY IMPORTANT things: please make sure that they are aware that other licensed vehicles, (such as pickups), can also legally use these trails during this time of year along with ATV/UTVs; and secondly, only roads that are signed as road routes open for ATV/UTV use during this time can be used.
Please let the public know they may visit our website at www.burnettcounty.com/trails for even more information. Anyone may also sign up through our website to receive current trail notifications via email or text. The website may also be helpful to you and your employees in answering any questions throughout the year.
Here’s the full explanation:
********As of September 16, the Burnett County State-Funded Summer Use ATV trails are closed. However, from September 16 through November 30 the Burnett County Forest woods trails and County Forest roads are open for ATV/UTV use. What this means is that you can ride your registered ATV/UTV on any woods trail, snowmobile trail and ATV trail located on County Forest Lands that is not bermed, gated or signed as closed and is at least eight feet wide. (A good rule of thumb is that if you can drive your truck down the trail, then you can take your ATV/UTV down it.) No off trail use is allowed and operation on private lands is illegal unless you have permission from the private landowner.
It is very important to note that all of these trails are currently multi-use trails. This means that any street legal, licensed vehicle can use these trails during this time, (trucks for example). It’s also important to note that these trails are no longer being maintained during this time of year. For these reasons the State-Funded Summer Use ATV Trail System is officially closed, even though you can still ride the majority of these same trails because they are located on County Forest Lands and township roads that currently allow for the use of ATV/UTV’s during this time of year.
Many townships allow the use of their town roads. If a town road is signed as a road route open for ATV use during this time, it can be used. If it is signed as closed, or if there is no signage, the town road is NOT open to ATV/UTV use. Please contact individual townships for their rules and regulations if you have any questions. Contact information can be found on our website at www.burnettcounty.com/townships.
Also note that ATV/UTV use is NOT allowed on the Gandy Dancer Trail at this time of year.
Remember, it is your responsibility to know where you are and whose property you are on. If you are unsure of where Burnett County Forest Land is located, please refer to a Burnett County Plat Book, as this is your best resource.
