Minocqua area fishing report 9.21.11

Fall is in full swing. Temps on the water have dropped to high 50's (flowages, small lakes) to low 60's on mid to large lakes. Forecast for rest of week with high in upper 50's mean water temps should continue to drop.

Walleye: Good. Walleyes setting up on classic fall patterns. Lakes -- gravel, rock and sand humps. Redtails on jigs or Lindy Rigs. Crawlers still effective. Look for depths of 19-34'. Flowages: Drowned wood in 12-14'. Large fatheads, redtails and cralwers on slip-floats or weedless jigs. Some smaller lakes seeing good weed bite on redtails, 1/16oz jig.

Musky: Good. Bucktails, twitch baits and spinnerbaits in 8-12'. Turning on to the suckers on quick sets. Don't rule out topwater. Good action on tail baits (Pacemakers, Whopper Ploppers, top Raiders) until turn-over.

Crappie: Good - Very good. Good catches of nice fish (12-14"). Lake seeing fish over weed tops in 8-10' on small minnows, 1" twisters or Charlie Bee Sliders fished high. Flowage crappies taking medium-large fatheads meant for walleyes.

Perch: Good. Nice fish of 9-12" this week taking fatheads or 1/2 crawlers on jigs or below floats in 10-14' weeds, drowned wood and even jumbos found on 30' sand flats while fishing walleyes.

Northern Pike: Good. Likking chubs on jigs/under floats. Action good as water cools. Spinnerbaits and spoons using moderate retrieves also working.

Bluegills: Good. Wroms, grubs around wood, pilings and weeds of 8-12'. some nice 9-10' this past week.

Smallmouth Bass: Good. Lakes - look deep. 29-14'. Jig with grubs, creatures. Scuplin looking baits good at this time. Flowage bass shallow tubes, wacky worms.

Largemouth Bass: Good. Stick to weeds of 8-12'. Wacky worms best. Beaver style plastics plundged through thick vegetation scoring larger (2 1/2#) fish.

Anglers should try to schedule trip durning next four weeks for most active fishing. Turn-over still due, but not all lake with turns at the same time (turn at approx 55 degrees), so plenty of options.
