A 48-inch musky mystery

As the sun punched into the humid Milwaukee sky Wednesday morning, it revealed a typical summer scene along the Lake Michigan shore: Joggers padded along the Veterans Park trail, early commuters zipped down Lincoln Memorial Drive and dozens of anglers lined Government Pier near McKinley Marina.

Most of the fishermen had been there for an hour or more. From atop the pier there were occasional calls of "Net!" and "Here's one" as anglers brought in yellow perch, brown trout and chinook salmon.

All in all, a normal day for shore anglers in Milwaukee.

As he is most mornings, Jim La Rose of Milwaukee was among the throng.

La Rose had made his last cast and was walking toward shore about 7:30 a.m. when he encountered an angler holding something that would make a memorable day anywhere, especially Milwaukee's lakefront: a 48-inch musky.

Like many in the fraternity of anglers, La Rose is not shy when it comes to fishing conversation. He stopped to admire the fish, share a story and take the photo accompanying this story.

According to La Rose, the lucky angler was fishing an alewife on the bottom, targeting salmon, when the musky hit.

"That fish might be the reason the perch fishing was poor," said a chuckling La Rose, who was skunked Wednesday for the first time all year.

The musky was kept, said La Rose. But he didn't ask the angler's name.
