How many bears are there across state?

UW researcher seeks answers with new study

MADISON — A University of Wisconsin research biologist is taking a new look at Wisconsin's black bear population, and the result of his work is likely to affect bear management in the state.

"There are more bears now than there probably have been in 20 years," said Tim VanDeelen, assistant professor of wildlife ecology, who is overseeing a two-year study in its final year. "We'd like to know how fast that population is growing, how much it's grown in the past 20 years and what's the spatial extent necessary for bears to coexist with one another."
