September Public Events at the Arboretum
GENERAL ARBORETUM EVENT INFORMATION:
Events are open to the public, and tours take place regardless of weather unless the naturalist decides it would be unsafe. Call 608-263-7888 if in doubt. Unless otherwise noted, public events are free and tours begin at the Arboretum Visitor Center. Visit our Web site at uwarboretum.org
 

Arboretum Visitor Center Hours: Weekdays 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Weekends 12:30 - 4 p.m.

September 2 - October 30
“Painting on Conservancy Lands.” Seymour, Wisconsin artist Marsha Tuchscherer interprets and celebrates the natural beauty of two Wisconsin conservancy lands -- Toft Point in Door County on Lake Michigan and the Pictured Rocks National Seashore on Lake Superior -- with vivid and evocative oil paintings.

September 1 - Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon
Arboretum Ecological Restoration Work Party: "Wingra Oak Savanna." Volunteer for restoration activities and learn about prairies and savannas. Tools and training provided. Groups welcome with advance notice. Meet at the gravel parking lot along Arbor Drive just off Monroe Street. For more information: 265-5214 or mlfarrior@wisc.edu
 
September 2 - Sunday, 1-3 p.m.
Arboretum Walk: "Grady Tract." Enjoy white and blue asters, goldenrods, sunflowers and gentians. Meet at the Grady Tract parking lot located at the southeast corner of the Beltline and Seminole Highway.
 
September 8 - Saturday, 8-11 am
Arboretum Class: “Fall Migration.” In this class, learn about bird migration, a natural event that has captivated the imagination, and also learn to identify some fall migrants. This class will have an indoor and outdoor component. Dress for the weather. Instructor: Sylvia Marek, Arboretum naturalist. Fee: 13.50 ($12 for members of Friends of the Arboretum). Registration required. Contact the Arboretum for a registration form, or register and pay online at www.uwarboretum.org

September 8  - Saturday, 1 p.m.
Arboretum Earth Partnership for Families: “Biomimicry -- Nature’s Inspirations, Human Inventions.”  People have “cribbed” many good ideas from nature. You may know about the inspiration for Velcro. How about the whole idea of flight? Chemiluminescence? Antifreeze?  For that matter, paper?  We’ll learn about all of these, and experiment with as many as we can.
 
September 9 - Sunday, 1-2:30 p.m.
Arboretum Walk: "More than mushrooms." See and learn about the fifth kingdom and other species in the gardens and woodlands at this time of year.
 
September 9 - Sunday, 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Arboretum Family Walk: "Fun with fungi." This family friendly walk is about mushrooms growing in the natural areas.
 
September 9 - Sunday, 2-3 p.m.
Arboretum Event: “Native Plant Garden Open House.” Explore our rain gardens, prairie gardens and woodland gardens on guided tours led by Arboretum staff. Come for inspiration, leave with tips and answers to your questions about native plant gardening.
 
September 15 - Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon

Arboretum Conference: “Native by Design: A How-To Conference for Gardeners.”  Using the Arboretum’s Wisconsin Native Plant Garden as an outdoor classroom, seminars are combined with expert advice and living examples to guide those wishing to become successful native gardeners. Fee: $50 ($43 for members of Friends of the Arboretum). Registration required. Contact the Arboretum for a registration form, or download a registration form online at www.uwarboretum.org
 
September 22 - Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon

Arboretum Walk: "Arboretum Sampler." See what is going on in the restored woodlands, wetlands and prairies near the Visitor Center.
