Explore Minnesota Birding Update - September 21, 2015

Roughly 200 species of birds that raise their young in Minnesota head south each autumn, and most of these birds can be seen traveling through the state in September. Look for active songbirds in the forests. Watch for staging sandhill cranes in northwestern Minnesota’s parks and fields. Check wetlands statewide for large numbers of waterfowl.

Please remember that migratory birds need extra food to fuel their long journey south. Our overwintering birds also need extra fuel. Help them by keeping your feeders full.

Did you know?

One of the most popular sites to view migratory birds is Hawk Ridge in Duluth where birds of prey can be seen September through November, with peak migration occurring mid-September.

The American Bird Conservancy has designated the Mississippi River Flyway a Globally Important Bird Area, as well as one of America’s greatest migration corridors. While prime bird watching opportunities are available year-round, roughly 40 percent of the nation's shorebirds and waterfowl use this flyway during migration periods. One popular birding location along the flyway is Lake Pepin where birders may see common loons, terns, scoters, jaegers, gulls, ducks, huge numbers of tundra swans, and common mergansers by the thousands! Lake City offers a wonderful Bird Watching Guide that identifies the birding hot spots along Minnesota's portion of the flyway.

The Pine to Prairie Birding Trail is another popular spot for birders. Learn more about "Fall Migration on the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail. "
